Beyond Refills: Promoting Adherence to Optimize Outcomes

Abstract

In this chapter, we describe the problem of low adherence to asthma self-management behaviors and discuss the multiple factors, such as psychosocial, functional, and cognitive, that may lead to intentional or nonintentional nonadherence to medications. We then discuss a variety of tools and strategies that clinicians and health systems can employ to assess and address patients that are nonadherent to self-management.
