Abstract
In 1958, Werner Heisenberg, in his 57th year, jumped the shark. At the Max Planck centennial in Berlin, he presented what others would label his Weltformel (World Formula), a final theory reducing all of physics, known and unknown, to the interactions of one elementary quantum field.

Die Aufgabe, die mathematischen Folgerungen der “Weltformel” so weit zu entwickeln, dass umfassende Vergleiche mit den experimentellen Tatsachen möglich werden, ist eine überaus schwierige Aufgabe. Zweifellos ist sie die schwierigste mathematische Aufgabe, die jemals in der Geschichte der Physik gestellt worden ist. Manche Spezialisten hegen Zweifel, ob sie überhaupt in “überzeugender Weise gelöst werden kann, und in diesem Sinne ist die Frage nach der empirischen Richtigkeit der Weltformel heute noch unbeantwortbar [...] Heisenberg selber hat sich trotz mancher Skepsis hervorragender Sachkundiger in seinem Optimismus nicht erschüttern lassen. I was able to obtain an overview of the coverage of Heisenberg’s theory in the German Press with the help of the Mediendokumentation at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach.
