Minnesota’s 1st and 8th Congressional Districts: Riptide—Two Republicans Prevail Against the Blue Wave
The 2018 campaigns for the Minnesota 1st and 8th Congressional Districts represent two of only three seats flipped in the U.S. House of Representatives for the Republican Party during the midterm elections. These successful Republican campaigns were considered surprising, as both districts had been Democratic strongholds in past elections. However, this electoral pivot is emblematic of current national trends, especially after the 2016 presidential election, for districts that are both rural and majority white. In this chapter we detail how the two Republican candidates were able to use the electoral characteristics of the 1st and 8th districts to their advantage and successfully fight against the Democratic “blue wave” and flip the seats for their party.
