Abstract

Substance use disorders are common and associated with increased perioperative risk. The perioperative period offers a unique opportunity to engage patients in addiction treatment. Whenever possible, clinicians should assess for substance use preoperatively, create a plan to manage withdrawal symptoms during the perioperative period and initiate or refer for treatment when patients are amenable.
