Abstract
Evaluating and counseling older drivers are important for patient and public safety. Appropriate assessment can lead to early identification and intervention on conditions that may impair driving skills with the goal of enhancing driving safety when able. Assessment requires a comprehensive medical evaluation with a focus on three main areas crucial for driving ability: vision, cognition, and motor function. When driving cessation is necessary, it is important for the clinician to help provide alternative transportation resources to try to prevent social isolation. Overall, assessing driving skills in older adults requires comprehensive evaluation, re-evaluation, and thoughtful management and planning to keep patients safe while also maintaining quality of life.
