Abstract
This chapter highlights the unique needs of the older patient and introduces the student to the remainder of this textbook. Fifteen key points about the care of the geriatric patient are presented. In particular, approaches to dealing with the complexity and subtle presentations of illness are discussed. Concepts such as normal aging, homeostenosis, frailty, polypharmacy, and multifactorial solutions to geriatrics syndromes are introduced. The importance of developing competency in transitions of care, sites of care, and end-of-life care to effectively care for the older patient is discussed.
