Abstract
Besides reporting available resources, the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) also reports potential merchantable assortments. For this purpose, the stem form of all recorded trees is estimated based on a combination of field measurements, regression models, splines and rotational integrals. Once the stem forms are described, the potential merchantable assortments are estimated by optimising cutting points along these hypothetical boles. This procedure is applied to NFI trees irrespective of their actual timber harvesting status, resulting in an estimate of the potential available assortments in the total Swiss growing stock.
