Abstract

In the fast changing landscape of academic surgery, disseminating significant and innovative research is fundamental to scientific advancement and career progression. The good news is that there are now many potential outlets for education research beyond surgical and academic journals. The focus of this chapter is to take a holistic perspective on publishing your work, with advice on how to select the right outlet and sumbmission category, guidance on how to structure research manuscripts tips on the process of writing, and perspectives on dealing with the inevitable challenges of publishing surgical education work – including concerns about authorship, collaborators, and dealing with rejection. If the aim in your academic life is to create a body of work that makes a unique contribution, and the momentum to keep that going amid busy clinical and teaching schedules, then getting your work published is integral – and enjoying the process is critical for longevity and impact.
