Abstract

This chapter is devoted to some aspects of restoration and conservation of metallic wind musical instruments made of brass and on silver alloys. The purpose of conservation is to study, record, retain and restore the culturally significant qualities of the object with the least possible intervention. The aim of restoration is to preserve and reveal the aesthetic and historical value of a cultural property. Restoration and conservation of metallic wind musical instruments are complementary actions. The action of restoration on each degraded tube of a metallic wind musical instrument is the result of the necessity to keep it in a working condition. A corner stone related to an objective approach for the conservation and restoration of brass musical instruments was suggested and demonstrated by Bacon (2003) utilizing only the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technique. Data about the chemical composition of the alloys of the studied musical instruments were related, into a complex context, to metallurgical, chronological and historical data.
