Teaching Safety, Health, and Environment in Engineering Programs for Millennials: Ethics Is the Basis

  • 168 Accesses

Abstract

Safety, health, and environment are required curricular topics by some organizations accrediting college engineering programs. These topics assume a level of common ethics among the students. The majority of current college students are millennials with unique world views, work experience, and learning styles. Also, common ethics cannot be assumed among global millennials steeped in moral relativism. Therefore, a positive approach to teaching ethics, experiential learning, artifactual ethical code reinforcement, and values-congruent behavior modeling is recommended for ethical development of future engineers.
