Abstract
The first chapter begins by exploring relevant terms to the book. It will outline working conceptualisations of sexuality and heteronormativity and explore the contribution of queer theory. It examines how the book’s conceptual framework incorporates the concepts of the heterosexual matrix and the heterosexual imaginary. It will examine the work that has been carried out on the heteronormativity of HEIs in the 1990s, primarily in the USA, and outline the four most important studies conducted in the UK. The chapter will also introduce the empirical study that heavily informs the book, a three-year self-study (S-STEP) into interrupting heteronormativity on youth and community work courses at a number of higher education institutions.
