Abstract
This chapter is the first of two in this book, to be devoted to a special population. Here, we focus on children and adolescents. We begin with the hypothetical case and then with an introduction to psychological factors relevant to children and adolescents. The chapter then provides a brief review of developmental stages in relation to pediatric behavioral medicine. The topic of attachment style and children’s and adolescents’ health behaviors and outcomes is presented, with studies on this topic. The chapter then covers the topics of parental responses to illness behavior and their relationship with health outcomes as well as the topic of children and adolescent’s stressors and health outcomes. We then study PNI mechanisms linking psychosocial factors with children’s health outcomes and effects of psychological interventions on children’s health outcomes. The chapter ends of course by returning to its opening “clinical case.”
