Abstract

Tumors of the eyelids are a common reason of disfigurement if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Surgical reconstruction of the eyelids can be technically challenging because of their prominent role in facial aesthetics and their function as sentinels of the eye. Eyelid reconstruction depends on the size of the fashioned defect regarding width, height, depth, and proximity to the eyelashes. The surgeon must keep in mind that the eyelid is roughly a bilamellar structure and it is exceedingly delicate as it is covered by the thinnest skin found in the human body. Moreover, the muscular layer and the conjunctiva of the eyelids are of paramount importance for their normal function. Additionally, it may be necessary to perform osteotomies and bone resection in case that a tumor infiltrates the underlying periosteum or bone.
