Abstract
Despite the sizeable literature on mental health problems and violence, there are significant knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in order to move research and clinical practice forward. This chapter summarizes major conclusions from previous research on a variety of topics: violence, public fears of mentally ill; psychiatric symptoms in adolescence; gender, race, and incarcerated individuals; violent victimization of mentally ill people; and the relationship between mental illness and suicide. A description of some commonly used background variables related to mental illness and violence (both separately and together) is provided, as well as the impact of early and later trauma and family antisocial values. The chapter concludes with a discussion about the overall methodological challenges in this area and the need for improved communication between the research community and practice. Finally, the implications of these results in the context of research, policy-making, and justice practices are discussed.
