Abstract

The Nordic countries are known for their progressive education, which places a strong emphasis on equality. However, these societies have experienced a number of significant school reforms, leading to increased demands on students to be disciplined, well-behaved and respectful. Moreover, in the Nordic context, the tendency of schools to treat unruly behaviour, bullying and violence as crimes is partly a new phenomenon. The process of increased regulation by law has been labelled juridification. As a result of this process, what were previously considered to be primarily pedagogical responsibilities and challenges have become subjects to legal consideration. The juridification of education has thus not only come to influence the requirements placed on professionals working at schools, but also made schools’ obligation to support the individual child stronger.
