Abstract
This paper is a review of basic concepts depicting what was introduced as general Weltanschauung by W. von Humboldt and developed further into the related concepts of national scientific worldview, and conceptual world view. A “Linguistic picture of the world” common for a specific language community as a way for conceptualization of the surrounding world of human activities reveals itself in pragmatics, i.e. in the use of language by a language user (in our case – the author of a publication and translator). The material for analysis is a collection of abstracts of research papers in English from different journals. The major purpose of the analysis conducted by the author is to show how the overlap between culture and pragmatics influences the pragmatic potential of the texts of research papers, and abstracts and the pragmatic value of their translations. This includes relationships between tendencies to understatement or overstatement, and explaining authors’ attitudes, etc. The results of the analysis are of practical importance for writing research papers by Russian-speaking authors.
