Exploring Betty A. Reardon’s Perspective on Peace Education

Abstract

Betty Reardon’s work as an activist and feminist peace scholar (2015), has contributed to the field of peace education by defining the central problematic of peace and justice as the violation of human dignity. Reardon identifies how the many forms of violence; direct, structural and cultural (Galtung 1969) have a symbiotic relationship to the current military war system and how this is derived from patriarchal ideologies that privilege and maintain gender differences. She introduced the feminist concept of human security (2019) as way to transform the existing militarized state security system rooted in patriarchal structures and values. Reardon sees patriarchy as a particularly complex ideology and set of beliefs that sustains and maintains the durability of the war system and violence in all of its forms. The transformative concept of human security that she conceptualized, recognizes the fulfillment of human rights as a prerequisite for creating conditions for a comprehensive peace.
