Abstract

Epidemiology, which focuses on population health, is contrasted in this basic introduction against outcomes research, with its focus on individual patients. However, similar outcome measures and research designs are often employed in both domains. The utility of important research design concepts, as well as confounding and other typical limitations inherent in each methodological approach, is discussed.
