Abstract

This chapter introduces the main question and the case study: how heritage looks on the ground in World Heritage sites and what happens when heritage collides with livelihood and daily life, and more particularly in the medina of Fez in Morocco—which have been listed as part of the World Heritage since 1981? In order to answer that question, scholars usually refer to several theoretical backgrounds whose presentation allows to understand how anthropology and human sciences have approached urban houses and cultural heritage. While some approaches really helped in structuring the theoretical framework of this book, others turned to be less useful.
