Abstract
Discrepancies in research and treatment of mental health issues based upon ethnic, racial, and cultural differences cannot be denied. Such is the case for Latino-American youth and young adults with attenuated psychosis syndrome (APS). Issues generated by a lack of focused research and perpetuated by inaccurate assessments and inaccessible interventions serve to further delineate incongruities in assistance provided to this group. This chapter aims to explore culturally relevant symptoms associated with APS in Latino-American youth and young adults and issues related to assessment. General treatment strategies and interventions for APS and those specifically tailored for Latino-American youth will be discussed. A case will also be presented to illustrate some of the intricacies, both culturally and symptomatically, when working with Latino youth who have APS. Finally, implications for research and treatment will be discussed.
