Abstract
Philippine historic churches are structures which stand as indisputable witnesses to urban development, some of which have been built way back in the 1600s under the Spanish colonizers. Guidelines on church planning during that period were based on the “Laws of the Indies” issued under King Philip II of Spain. Today, urbanization has changed much of the Philippine rural landscape, including that in Bulacan, a province geographically adjacent to the country’s national capital, Manila. The onslaught of development changed the otherwise pastoral setting of many Bulacan towns as reflected on church exteriors and interiors including its immediate environs. The present-day government and church laws and guidelines fell short of protecting built heritage from the detrimental effects of modernization and development. The current state of these ecclesiastical structures will somehow instigate architectural realization on the need to impede further harmful imprints of urbanization to historic churches in Bulacan.
