Postoperative Complications in the Intensive Care Unit

Emergency Surgery in Obese Patients

Part of the book series: Updates in Surgery ((UPDATESSURG))

Abstract

The incidence and prevalence of obesity continue to increase globally. Obese patients have an increased risk of postoperative complications after bariatric surgery. Obesity is also a risk factor for admission to the intensive care unit, which may negatively impact outcomes. An appropriate surgical and anesthetic approach for obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery is required to minimize the risk of postoperative complications and admission to the intensive care unit. Understanding the risk factors for postoperative complications, as well as preventing or quickly recognizing these complications, may help clinicians improve the postoperative course of bariatric patients.
