Abstract
This chapter provides a preliminary and limited test of the study hypotheses regarding the relationship between race/Hispanic origin and mortality risk. Controlling only for year of birth, African-American and Hispanic players have an elevated risk for all-cause mortality relative to non-Hispanic white players. This increased mortality risk is more robust for African-American (38%) than it is for Hispanic players (21%). Additional analyses are required before reaching any final conclusions with respect to the hypotheses . This will be addressed in Chaps. 7–9.
