Abstract

In this chapter, we address some few distinctive features on the issue of complications and adverse events after bariatric and metabolic surgery, when using the current platform (“Intuitive Surgical Inc.”) for robotic surgery. Complications after robotic bariatric surgery are generally similar to those observed after laparoscopic surgery. However, two significant differences have been widely observed and reported: lower rate of anastomotic leak in the case of gastrojejunal or duodenoileal anastomosis and lower incidence of overall complications after revision surgery. In about 99% of cases there are no device related adverse events, which seem to occur in about 0.6% of cases. When a device related adverse event happens, a significant negative impact for the patient will occur in 14.4% of cases.
