Abstract
Osteoarthritis of the hand is common. Although often asymptomatic, it may be related to symptoms and signs of deformity, increasing pain, and impaired function. There are specific instruments developed that can measure the impact of osteoarthritis of the hand on pain and function that have been developed and validated in clinical trials. These instruments perform as well or better than simple nonspecific pain scales. The Australian/Canadian Osteoarthritis Hand Index (AUSCAN) and the Functional Index of Hand Osteoarthritis (FIHOA) have been validated in several languages and are useful instruments for defining the extent of hand osteoarthritis and following the course of involvement.
