Abstract

The following chapter will address complications up to the end of the 13th week of pregnancy.

A brief outline of embryogenesis and structures found on an early pregnancy scan report will be given. The developing role of the early pregnancy nurse and the care provided in early pregnancy units will be evaluated in relation to National and Royal College guidelines.

The assessment of women presenting with bleeding and pain in early pregnancy and the challenges it brings will be outlined. Pregnancy loss including miscarriage, recurrent miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy will be discussed with the provision of current guidelines and managements.

Investigations and managements for nausea, vomiting and hyperemesis gravidarum will be highlighted.

The term “woman and her partner” will be used in the text, but it is recognised that women may not have any support. Throughout the text, accounts will be given from women who have experienced pregnancy- related complications or loss.
