The Fandom of David Bowie

In this chapter, we explore the notion of fandom and why David Bowie is a figure that should be explored through a fan-led lens. We define our key concepts, drawing on contextual material to do so. We demonstrate how the fandom of David Bowie exists within fan-gift economies, traverses a range of identity positions and negotiates hopeful spaces of belonging for those who might feel marginalised by society. The chapter works to set up the key frames of the book.
