Abstract

In this chapter, the possibility of achieving a sustainable global timber supply situation by 2025 or 2030 in accordance with the SDG No.15 is discussed. Seven major systems of Criteria and Indicators for SFM used in different regions around the world are reviewed and found to lack any quantitative indicators or threshold values, rendering them more or less useless for assessing whether sustainability is being achieved. Only the system adopted by the African Timber Organisation focuses on the practicalities of forest management at the FMU level. Some low cost systems for monitoring environmental factors and biodiversity are described.
