Abstract
The post-global economy presents an emerging context for sustainable supply chain management. A key challenge is to investigate the feasibility of supply chains for this context. This chapter proposes a Freedoms-of-Movement Lens (FoMs Lens) to characterise the post-global economy in terms of four dimensions – goods, labour, information and capital. The FoMs Lens is demonstrated with a supply chain configuration termed Island Manufacturing. Island Manufacturing operates as a Distributed Manufacturing configuration at the global scale while applying Circular Economy principles at the local scale. Two illustrative examples are presented. The FoMs Lens is tuned to represent one possible view of a post-global economy and applied upon Island Manufacturing. Through this demonstration exercise, we argue that Distributed Manufacturing supply chains can reduce import-tariffs on goods, and create local manufacturing jobs in a post-global economy. Further, we illustrate how the sustainability concerns of local stakeholders can be accommodated in Distributed Manufacturing supply chains.
