Abstract
Apparatus regularly used for extraction of stress – strain response of soils all contain internal variations of strain and stress. The inhomogeneous state is the natural state of many soils. Where the repeated cell size of heterogeneities is uniform it is simple to define a reference volume element. Study of triaxial samples, however, reveals mechanisms which are not individually axially symmetric.
