Abstract
The Petrodvortsovy district is one of the suburbs of St Petersburg. With 3% of the population of the city residing in this district covering about 8% of the city territory and containing over 20% of its historical and cultural monuments, it has a distinctive character. The research aims to describe transformational processes of the spatial structure of the Petrodvortsovy district as well as to systematize the data on main factors of its development. It also provides the analysis of the conditions determining the contemporary condition of the city and the view of possible changes. The methods employed to conduct the research are historical-geographical, comparative and analytical ones. The article identifies the prospects of development of primary spatial zones of the Petrodvortsovy district.
