Abstract
The high health, social, and economic impact of spinal injuries is disproportionate in developing nations, as with all trauma, and a high index of suspicion for these injuries is key to assessment and treatment. Trauma protocols in the developed world have become highly sophisticated and include requisite CT scans of the cervical spine as well as the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. This is not possible in a resource-limited setting, but following the tenets of thorough examinations of the spine and the neurologic systems will alert the surgeon to these injuries with the potential for limiting disabilities.
