Abstract

The second part of the book focuses on Simmel’s final book The View of Life. That book is made-up of four essays. This particular chapter focuses upon the third of those essays. It looks at the way that Simmel brings questions of death and mortality into his analysis. In particular it explores how death creates limits within which life is led. The chapter explores Simmel’s argument about death being immanent to life rather than being its opposite. The chapter also looks at concepts that advance these points, such as Simmel’s discussions of fate.
