Abstract
Idiopathic thrombocytopenia (ITP) can present as life-threatening bleeding. The diagnosis can be difficult to make, and it is ultimately a diagnosis of exclusion. In the acute phase, the hallmark of treatment is transfusion of necessary blood products and the initiation of both steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) to prevent antibody sequestration of the platelets. Several new medical therapies are available for the non-acute presentation of ITP. The medical management of ITP will be discussed in this chapter.
