Abstract

Gallstone disease is highly prevalent and is a common surgical indication. This chapter discusses the appropriate timing of surgical intervention in gallstone disease – specifically, in acute cholecystitis and gallstone pancreatitis. The surgical literature has long debated early versus late cholecystectomy in both disease processes. Large randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses suggest early cholecystectomy is beneficial in acute cholecystitis and mild gallstone pancreatitis. This chapter will also briefly discuss two important tenets of acute surgical intervention in gallstone disease: the critical view of safety and damage control cholecystectomy.
