Deer's Treatment of Pain

Abstract

Chronic pain from a peripheral nerve affects 8–10% of adults with chronic neuropathic pain. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a proven therapy for patients with such peripheral areas of pain. In this therapy, non-painful stimulation of a peripheral nerve is perceived as pleasant paresthesia leading to pain relief. Various new advances in PNS have enabled implanters to provide this therapy with much surgical ease and efficacious results. A variety of nerves can be targeted for craniofacial or extremity pain syndromes. Recently a well-designed prospective double-blinded multicenter crossover trial lead to FDA approval of a device specifically for PNS.
