Abstract

In recent history, generic vibration limits have been developed which provide frequency-dependent sensitivities for wide classes of applications. These vibration criterion (VC) curves are internationally accepted as a basis for designing and evaluating the performance of structures. Within these VC curves, the Office (ISO) criterion has been used as a guideline for the design of office spaces. However, as offices gradually move away from paper-based offices to electronic ones, as well as from the traditional private office layouts to open concept offices, the Office (ISO) criterion may no longer be appropriate.

This paper provides three case studies of office floors that have been verified to meet the Office (ISO) criterion through measurements, but which have generated a number of objections from occupants due to excessive floor vibrations. Thus, these case studies suggest that a reassessment of the Office (ISO) criterion is necessary, to determine if a more stringent criterion is required for the design of office spaces.
