Abstract
Children’s hip diseases were not well understood until the advent of X-ray in 1895. Thus childhood surgery prior to that time was limited to draining of infections, closed reductions (a few open) of dislocated hips and other limited procedures. X-ray availability, antibiotics, and stainless steel implants revolutionized thinking about childhood hip surgery. This chapter focuses on the key advances made over the last 100 years in the surgical treatment of congenital (developmental) dislocation of the hip, Perthes disease, and slipped capital femoral epiphysis.
