Surgical Treatment of the Abdominal Aorta

Diseases of the Aorta

Abstract

Although the advent of endovascular stent-grafting has revolutionized the treatment of surgical aortic disease, open surgery remains the preferred management for many patients requiring repair. Using techniques refined over the last six decades combined with careful patient selection, open surgical treatment remains the gold standard and can be done with excellent long-term results. Here, we present the major concepts in planning and executing surgical repair of aneurysms, dissection, and occlusive diseases of the aorta. Anatomic and technical considerations are presented, as well as the role of open surgery in hybrid aneurysm repair. Care of the postoperative patient is also discussed.
