Abstract

This chapter describes nursing science in Denmark as a story of an upcoming flourishing academic discipline. To put the story in context, this chapter offers a broad overview of the Danish welfare society and the healthcare system as a framework within which current development trends in nursing are to be considered. Health politics about patient involvement is given special attention because the paradigm shift towards holistic healthcare is considered highly relevant to strengthen future nursing science and practice. Thereafter, the chapter addresses some important characteristics and events that have influenced nursing science in Denmark through the last four decades. Hopefully this story will inspire nurse leaders around the world to choose their strategic matches carefully to improve nursing in all facets of the profession for the benefit of those in need of nursing care. Finally, the future challenges to be solved are discussed, including some suggestions on future developments of nursing science.
