Abstract
This chapter provides introduction on leadership in nursing in Nordic countries, the relevance of a book focusing on leadership, nursing and the Nordic countries. It discusses the importance of leadership for nurses in all arenas of nursing and healthcare. Further it touches on the societal developments which influence nursing from the days of Florence Nightingale (1820–1910) and links in with the development of nursing in the Nordic countries with focus on education, research, educational reforms and organization of healthcare. At last it provides an overview of the organization of the different chapters and introduces the reader to the structure and content of Leadership and Nursing Science in the Nordic countries.
