Abstract
The 2002 constitution provides for a strong executive president. In 2015 a referendum on a constitution change regarding the length of a presidential term and the age limit, proposed by Sassou Nguesso’s PCT party, took place. The age limit of 70 years for candidates was eliminated, the minimum age requirement for candidates fell from 40 to 30 years, the length of presidential terms was reduced from seven to five years and the term limit went up to three terms. The referendum also re-established the post of prime minister as head of government rather than the president.
