Abstract

Although there is a number of weaknesses in the body of research that details the experiences and development outcomes of multi-type child maltreatment, existing evidence is rather conclusive as to what it reveals about the co-occurrence of different forms of abuse and neglect in children. Rarely do children encounter a single form of maltreatment, and often they are victimized in multiple ways within the home, and sometimes outside the home as well. The study of risk and protective factors for child maltreatment provides a foundation for public health models of primary and secondary prevention. Promoting positive relationships and nurturing environments for children and families is key to lessening the risks for child victimization and to improving the life chances of those who have already been victimized.
