Abstract

Einstein’s relationship to Germany went through highs and lows. In 1954, one year before his death, he wrote a brief autobiography beginning with the words, “I was born a German in Ulm in 1879. I spent my youth in Munich, where I attended high school. In 1895, following a brief stay in Italy, I went to Switzerland. From 1896 to 1900, I studied mathematics and physics in Zürich at the Swiss Polytechnic.”
