Abstract
Good psychiatric care begins with a thorough assessment and with careful attention paid to aspects that can be unique in treating individuals with intellectual disability (ID). The biopsychosocial model allows for a clear framework to conceptualize individuals with ID and address an individual’s specific needs. Certain characteristics such as practical elements of and common difficulties in interviewing make the psychiatric assessment of individuals with ID different from treating individuals without ID; however, the tenants of a comprehensive formulation remain the same.
