Modernisation Through Europeanisation? Polish “Free Movers” in Post-enlargement Film (2005–2017)

Abstract

This chapter discusses the expansion and transformation of the post-1989 tendencies in the wake of Poland’s accession to the EU and combines an institutional perspective—the catalyst role of the Polish Film Institute—with a focus on representational practices. It argues that the multifaceted process of Europeanisation makes Polish migrant characters gradually lose the label of prototypical blue-collar worker and makes them appear in new guises and costumes, most notably in the shape of free moving European citizens. It equally points to a significant number of “parallel narratives” which—by exposing the commonalities, rather than the differences, between local and migrant characters—contribute to the humanisation of the latter. The end of the chapter shifts attention to a series of recent film projects realised by hyphenated directors (including Paweł Pawlikowski, Urszula Antoniak and Julia Kowalski).
