The Ishango Site
The second part of the book presents the main actors: the Ishango artefacts, found near a Congolese village called “Ishango”, at the sources of the Nile. They carry columns of grouped carvings that intrigue mathematicians ever since. Aspects of the archaeological site are shown in exceptional pictures, until today only published in the official excavation report from 1957, a very rare book. Issues about the dating of the objects are discussed and hopefully convince the reader they are about 22,000 years old.
