Future-Oriented Treatments for Suicide: An Overview of Three Modern Approaches

A Positive Psychological Approach to Suicide

Part of the book series: Advances in Mental Health and Addiction ((AMHA))

Abstract

Future-oriented expectancies, including pessimism and hopelessness, are long-established risk factors for suicide; however, modern theories and developing treatments also address positive views of the future, such as an adaptive future orientation, optimism, and hopefulness. In this chapter, Hope Therapy, Future-Directed Therapy, and Future-Oriented Group Training are discussed, including their rationale and application to the treatment of depression and suicidality. What these three treatments have in common is a temporal focus on the future, and the encouragement of patients to strive toward adaptive, future-focused goals. Yet, each approaches this task in a slightly different manner, whether by insuring that the goal of suicide is replaced with life-saving behaviors that enhance the patient’s ability to view the past, present, and future from a cognitively healthier perspective, or by promoting goal-setting and problem-solving abilities. Although additional research is needed, preliminary findings indicate that future-focused therapies may be successfully utilized as an adaptive, strengths-based approach to the treatment of suicide risk factors, as well as suicidal outcomes.
