Abstract
A brief historical background setting the stage for the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition of 1910–1912, including Roald Amundsen’s previous experience in the Antarctic and Arctic, the international debate on the use of dogs in Polar exploration, the race for Polar discovery, the taking of the North Pole, and Amundsen’s decision to attempt to reach the South Pole – using sled dogs.
