Abstract

It is just past eight o’clock in the morning in Port Lligat, Girona. Three coraleros, or coral fishers, are deciding where they will take their boat today, now that it is the authorized season for extracting red coral (Corallium rubrum) in this area of the Mediterranean. It is a difficult decision, because the best areas where they are (Natural Park of Cap de Creus) are scarce and subject to the moods of the weather: tramontana winds with stormy, unpredictable twists.
